Andrew Goebel is a graduate student in the department's Archaeology PhD program. He is interested in combining archaeological and ethnohistorical methods and evidence to explore human-animal relationships, including the influence of animals on religion and folklore and how ancient cultures generated zoological knowledge. Goebel is also interested in the persistence of extinct animals in folk memory and oral traditions, particularly in terms of human-proboscidean interactions. Finally, Goebel intends to examine examples of fossils found by ancient and pre-industrial cultures in both their anatomic and archaeological contexts.
