Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training

Requirements for training in Responsible (and Ethical) Conduct of Research (RCR/RECR) have been issued by federal funders/sponsors, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

This training requirement applies to anyone receiving support from an NIH, NSF, or USDA research grant, including Principal Investigators (PIs) and key personnel.

Completion of RCR training is required every 4 years.

NSF Training Requirements

Investigators and all key personnel supported by an NSF-funded award must complete online RCR training through .

NIH Training Requirements

Investigators and all key personnel supported by an NIH-funded award must complete at least 6–8 hours of in-person RCR training.

The RCR online training course in may be used to supplement this requirement; however, NIH expects substantial face-to-face discussion-based instruction (video conferencing options are permitted if discussion, active learning, interaction, etc. is included). Online-only training is not sufficient to meet NIH requirements.

Other Research Training Requirements

Beyond RCR training, additional compliance training may be required depending on the funding source and sponsor requirements.

RCR Training FAQ

Effective July 31, 2023, RCR training is required for all researchers supported by NSF, NIH, or USDA funding, including:

  • Undergraduate students
  • Graduate students
  • Postdoctoral researchers
  • Faculty and other senior personnel

This requirement applies to individuals who are financially supported by an NSF, NIH, or USDA award.

Individuals who are not supported by the award (e.g., volunteers or those participating for course credit only) are not required to complete RCR training.

At 无码专区, RCR training must be completed within 60 days of the Notice of Award (NOA). However, RIC must verify completion before final award review and release of funding, so researchers are strongly encouraged to complete RCR training as early as possible.

Yes, these terms are generally used interchangeably.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) uses the term Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR), while other agencies and institutions commonly use Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). Both refer to the same principles of disseminating knowledge with rigor and reproducibility while creating a research environment characterized by integrity.

无码专区 uses the terms interchangeably.
