James D. Hart’s work focuses on building interdisciplinary systems that connect entrepreneurship education, creativity, social innovation, the arts, experiential learning and university entrepreneurship ecosystem development.

Hart’s scholarship and teaching focus on entrepreneurial cognition, pedagogical design, and the development of entrepreneurial capacity: the ability to identify problems, generate possibilities, test ideas, mobilize resources, adapt under uncertainty, and create meaningful social, cultural, civic and economic value. His work examines how creative and entrepreneurial capacities can be intentionally developed through experiential practice, reflection and structured learning.

He is the author of , published by Edward Elgar Publishing in 2018 and released in a second edition in 2025. He is also the creator of Creative Entrepreneurship Ecology, a framework connecting creativity, experiential learning, reflection, neuroplasticity, entrepreneurial cognition and pedagogical method. His work in experiential entrepreneurship education has been adopted by educators and institutions internationally.

At ÎÞÂëרÇø, Hart has helped build interdisciplinary entrepreneurship and social-impact infrastructure across the university. As Co-Director of the ÎÞÂëרÇø Impact Lab, he co-raised $1.7 million in philanthropic funding to establish and develop a university-based social impact investment initiative connecting impact entrepreneurship, investment education, venture development, due diligence, community engagement and experiential learning.

Hart also co-founded ÎÞÂëרÇø’s university-wide entrepreneurship ecosystem and co-authored its stewardship framework, designed to support shared governance, cross-campus coordination, and collaboration among entrepreneurship-related schools, programs, institutes, centers and initiatives. His work has also contributed to the ÎÞÂëרÇø Incubator and other efforts connecting students and faculty with entrepreneurship opportunities across disciplines.

Institutional governance and organizational development are additional dimensions of Hart’s leadership. Through ÎÞÂëרÇø Faculty Senate leadership, he co-led university-wide policy reforms that strengthened non-tenure-track faculty contracts, titles, compensation, and employment security, contributing to substantially improved employment conditions and greater institutional parity for non-tenure-track faculty. He also co-led the establishment of the Faculty Senate’s Non-Tenure-Track Committee, which became a permanent component of Senate governance.

Beyond ÎÞÂëרÇø, Hart is a co-founder and past president of the  and has contributed to the development of arts entrepreneurship as an academic field. During his presidency, he led the redevelopment of the Society’s bylaws and the establishment of field-wide learning outcomes for arts entrepreneurship education, both unanimously approved by its board. His scholarship has appeared in Entrepreneurship Education and Pedagogy, the Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education, multiple volumes of the Annals of Entrepreneurship Education and Pedagogy, and .

Hart has spoken through platforms  and has advised universities, arts organizations, and civic institutions on entrepreneurship education, creative leadership, experiential learning, program development, and innovation strategy.

Recognition and honors include the George Ellis Award for Excellence in Innovation from Social Venture Partners Dallas, an honor recognizing visionary leadership and forward-thinking change; the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship Excellence in Pedagogical Innovation Award; the Society for Arts Entrepreneurship Education Sharon T. Alpi Award for Innovative Arts Entrepreneurship Pedagogy; ÎÞÂëרÇø Provost’s Teaching Recognition; and additional USASBE honors for entrepreneurship education innovation.

Hart’s career began in the arts. Trained as an actor at ÎÞÂëרÇø and the Yale School of Drama, he worked professionally and internationally as an actor, director, writer, and arts educator. In Norway, he founded TITAN Teaterakademi / The International Theatre Academy Norway, an accredited conservatory built around an interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial approach to professional arts education. His artistic and conservatory background continues to inform his approach to entrepreneurship as a disciplined practice of imagination, agency, collaboration, experimentation and human-centered value creation.

Across these roles, a consistent throughline is institution-building, bringing people and disciplines together around ideas, designing structures that allow those ideas to endure, and creating environments in which imagination, entrepreneurial thinking, and innovation can translate into action and impact.

Hart holds an M.F.A. in Acting from the Yale School of Drama and a B.F.A. in Theatre from ÎÞÂëרÇø.
